It’s that time of the week again, time for another Throwback Thursday! For people like me who are in their final year at university in the U.K, we are at a time of the year in which its time to hand in our final project dissertations, or have exams coming up (also why I’ve been posting so late recently!). In light of this, music is what is keeping me going right now, and I have had this album on repeat all week.
Anyone that knows me personally will know that I’m a huge Frank Ocean fanboy, and this album is my favourite album of all time, even though I absolutely love ‘Blonde’. I have been trying to work in a Frank Ocean blog since I first started, so here it is!
Released July 10th, 2012, Channel ORANGE has grown to become a fan favourite for Frank Ocean fans around the world, featuring 17 beautiful tracks, with a few notable features in Earl Sweatshirt, John Mayer and Andre 3000. Frank Ocean has proven himself to be a phenomenal songwriter and vocalist, and used personal experiences as well as imagination to write the songs for this album.
The album opens with a track named “Start” and closes with a track named “End”, with “Start” having no vocals from Frank, and “End” featuring his 2012 track “Voodoo” playing over a stereo whilst he is in the backseat of a car. “Thinkin Bout You” is undoubtedly Franks most famous song from the album, peaking at 32 on the Billboard top 100. Much of the album features songs about Franks emotions and relationships, with the album receiving high praise from music critics everywhere. Songs such as ‘Pink Matter’ and ‘Bad Religion’ feature lyrics about relationships and betrayal, this being a key theme of the album.
The album isn’t all slow and emotional, and Frank shows he can produce up tempo music in songs such as “Sweet Life” and “Lost” (Another fan favourite from the album). “Pyramids” has been hailed as the albums centre piece, and is almost 10 minutes long. The song starts with a kind of up tempo beat, and switches to a slower tempo halfway through.
I could sit here and talk about how great Frank Ocean is (I’ll spare you the time), but Channel ORANGE is an unbelievably good album, and one that will remain to be my favourite for probably a long time. If you are a fan of Frank Ocean I’d love to know what your favourite track from the album is!
Favourite song on the album: Bad Religion
