Throwback Thursday – OutKast: ‘Aquemini’

Happy Thursday everyone, here we are again looking back at some classic music, and this week I have for you an album that turns 20 years old this weekend, crazy right? That album is no other than the famous ‘Aquemini’ by OutKast.

Two of the most talented rappers of all time, Andre Benjamin and Antwan Patton, form the famous Atlanta duo ‘OutKast’. Popularizing Southern hip-hop back in the 90’s, OutKast are known to be one of the most successful hip-hop groups to ever grace the mic, boasting 6 Grammy awards and over 25 million record sales worldwide, with one of the most sold albums of their career being ‘Aquemini’, which went platinum just 2 months after its release, and double platinum a year later.

‘Aquemini’ is titled using Andre 3000 and Big Boi’s star signs combined (Aquarius and Gemini), and was released on September 29th 1998. The album features 16 songs including famous tracks such as “Rosa Parks” and the title track “Aquemini”. The album was described as “very experimental’, with the duo saying that most of the tracks for the album were recorded during chilled jam sessions in the studio.

I was only 1 years old when this album was released which is crazy, but growing up listening and loving rap and hip-hop music as a whole, I heard the album a few times and instantly fell in love, being one of, if not THE most influential rap album of its time. The instrumentals on the album are heavily influenced by literally every genre you could think of, some tracks are funky, some are chilled and some are just straight fire. It was also said that a lot of Andre 3000s influence came from listening to Bob Marley.

When listening to this album, it really makes me wish I was old enough to experience this album when it was first released, but even now in 2018, this album bangs (Also the album artwork is sick).

Favourite song on the album: “Slump”
