Welcome back to another edition of Throwback Thursday if you are reading this blog. Always one of my favourite times of the week looking back at some of my favourite albums, and recently was the 6th anniversary of a rap album that is already an all time classic only this far down its timeline, and that album is Good Kid m.A.A.d City by the incredibly talented Kendrick Lamar.
Now this album for me was one that boosted my love for rap and hip hop massively, and recently I ticked it off my bucket list and saw him live at Leeds Festival, and my gosh was he incredible. To see so many fans singing along every word to songs from this album was amazing to see, and shows that he has a fan base that has been with him from the early days.
Released 22nd October 2012, reaching number 2 in the US top 200 Billboard, and selling 242,000 copies in its first week, the highest grossing album of any male hip hop artist in 2012, ‘Good Kid m.A.A.d City’ earned 4 Grammy nominations at the 56th Grammy Awards, including a nomination for Album of the Year. The album has now been certified Triple Platinum, and has sold 1.7 million copies since its release.
The Influence of Good Kid m.A.A.d City on Hip Hop
The album consists of some of Kendrick Lamar’s most famous singles, in the likes of; “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe”, “m.A.A.d City” and “Swimming Pools”, as well as some other fan favourites such as “Backseat Freestyle” (originally produced for Ciara) and “Poetic Justice” featuring Drake. A lot of the production on the album came from the legendary Dr.Dre, as well as production from in house producers at ‘Top Dawg Entertainment’, and guest producers such as Pharrell Williams.
A direct look through Kendrick Lamar’s eyes at life living in Compton. Family, violence, gangs, one of the most violent places on earth, Compton USA remains an integral part of Kendrick Lamar’s life. Good Kid m.A.A.d city will remain to be one of the most influential rap albums ever to grace our ears.
Favourite song on the album: “Money Trees”
